A Place For Healing

For Karla Smith Behavioral Health, our location is a place unlike any other in our region. On this therapeutic wellness campus, nature, community, and compassionate care come together to create new possibilities for healing.

Nestled among peaceful green spaces in Belleville, Illinois, Karla Smith Behavioral Health at The Farm is more than our home. It’s a reflection of everything we believe about mental health care: that healing takes time, that every journey is unique, and that the environment around us has the power to support meaningful and powerful change.

While our clinical expertise remains at the heart of everything we do, this space allows us to care for people in ways that extend beyond the traditional therapy office, creating opportunities to move, create, learn, connect, and breathe. Every individual who comes to visit us has different goals, different experiences, and different needs, which is why every therapeutic journey is personalized. Rather than asking people to fit into a single model of care, our campus allows us to meet them where they are and create experiences that reflect the path that’s right for them.

The Farm’s Legacy

Long before it became home to Karla Smith Behavioral Health, the historic farmhouse on our property welcomed generations of families and stories.

Today, we have honored that legacy by carefully restoring the property while building excitement for what it’s become: a place where individuals and families can discover hope, resilience, and belonging. Rather than forget the farm’s history, we’re adding to it and preserving its warmth and character while creating spaces designed to support modern mental health care.

Beyond the therapy room

Healing doesn’t solely happen in conversation. Sometimes, it happens during a quiet walk under the trees, or while tending a garden, preparing a meal, creating art, caring for animals, or simply sitting beside the water.

While therapy is where new coping and growth tools can be introduced, our property is where those tools can come to life. Here, individuals have the opportunity to practice communication, emotional regulation, mindfulness, confidence, and healthy coping skills in real-world settings, turning conversations into meaningful action.

It continues to be proven what many people already know instinctively: spending time in nature can reduce stress, improve mood, strengthen emotional resilience, and create the space people need to process life’s challenges. For this reason, every corner of our property has been envisioned with intention, not simply as beautiful surroundings, but as part of the therapeutic experience itself.

    Tour KSBH at the Farm

    The Farmhouse

Warm, welcoming, and designed to feel more like home than a traditional mental health clinic, the farmhouse provides spaces for individual therapy, family sessions, clinical services, cooking classes, and more. It’s where each person’s individualized care begins, creating a foundation that extends throughout every experience on the property.

    Therapeutic Garden

Throughout the property, gardens offer opportunities for mindfulness, horticultural therapy, reflection, and connection with nature. Whether tending vegetables, gathering flowers, or simply enjoying the peace, these spaces invite people to slow down and reconnect.

    Creative & Experiential Therapy Spaces

Dedicated areas throughout the property, such as our art barn, provide support for experiential therapies including art, music, movement, gardening, life skills development, and other hands-on approaches that help people express themselves in meaningful ways. These spaces allow individuals to actively practice the skills they develop in therapy, building confidence and creating lasting habits that extend well beyond their time with KSBH.

    The Lake

Peaceful sitting areas near the lake offer opportunities for reflection and mindfulness. These restorative spaces encourage individuals and families to slow down, recharge, and experience the calming effects of nature as part of their healing journey.

    Every Step Forward
    Starts Here

Just like the people we serve, The Farm is always growing. Through our ongoing capital campaign, we’ll continue expanding the campus with new therapeutic spaces, experiential offerings, and opportunities for connection, creating even more ways for individuals, families, and our community to heal, learn, and thrive together.

Our vision at Karla Smith Behavioral Health has always been centered around creating a wellness community where people of all ages can gather, learn, share their talents, and support one another.

Whether someone is visiting us for individual therapy, participating in an experiential program, attending a workshop, or simply discovering new ways to put what they’ve learned into practice, every experience is designed to help them continue moving forward with confidence.
